ロッシーニのスターバト・マーテルは1842年1月7日に初演されました。

スターバト・マーテルは13世紀に誕生したカトリックの聖歌です。イエス・キリスト時が磔になった時の母マリアの悲しみを歌った詩で、600人以上の作曲家が曲を作っていると言われています。

オペラの作曲家としてベートーヴェンをも嫉妬させる成功を収めたロッシーニは1929年37歳の時の「ウィリアム・テル」を最後にオペラ界から引退し、その後40年はわずかの宗教曲を作曲しただけでした。「スターバト・マーテル」は、彼の後半生の最大の傑作と言われています。悲しみの曲ですが、明るく美しいロッシーニらしい音楽です。
