サン=サーンスの交響詩「ヘラクレスの青年時代」op.50は1877年1月28日にシャトレ座で初演されました。

サン=サーンスは4作の交響詩を作曲しています。この曲が最後の交響詩となりました。サン=サーンス自身が、4つの交響詩について「死の舞踏」は「死の恐怖とアイロニー」、「オンファールの糸車」は「誘惑」、「ファエトン」は「「誇り」を、そして「ヘラクレスの青年時代」は「英雄主義と性的な快楽との煩悩」を表現したと言っています。

この曲は三部から出来ていて中間部での誘惑との葛藤を経て英雄を取り戻す内容になっています。

Saint-Saëns himself told about the four symphonic poem presented as follows;  "Danse macabre" is "fear of death and irony", "Le Rouet d'Omphale " is "temptation", "Phaethon" the "is" pride ", and　"La jeunesse d'Hercule" is "Discord during  Heroism and sexual pleasure. "
