ヒンデミットのウェーバーの主題による交響的変容は1944年1月20日にロジンスキー指揮ニューヨーク・フィルハーモニックの演奏で初演されました。

20世紀ドイツの作曲家として、新ウィーン楽派とは一線を画す独自路線を歩んだ作曲家です。

ウェーバーの主題による交響的変容は、ナチスの攻撃によりドイツを離れてアメリカに逃れていた間に作曲されました。ウェーバーのピアノ連弾曲や劇音楽「トゥーランドット」の序曲から主題を取って4つの楽章にした作品です。ヒンデミットにしては楽しい作品なので演奏機会が比較的多い曲です。
