フランスの作曲家サン=サーンスは1921年12月16日に86歳で亡くなりました。

サン=サーンスは、2歳でピアノを弾いて3歳で作曲をしたと言われる神童タイプの音楽家でした。作曲以外でもピアノとオルガンは超一流で、音楽以外にも詩、天文学、数学、絵画など広い分野で一流と言われていました。

博識は、音楽の世界でも発揮され、様々な楽器に精通しており、ピアノ、ヴァイオリン、チェロなど優れた協奏曲を多く作曲しました。

サン=サーンスはチェロ協奏曲を2曲作曲していますが、現在多く演奏されるのは第1番です。1872年の作品で三部構成の単一楽章からできています。冒頭の骨太のチェロのソロで、チェロ協奏曲の世界に引き込まれる作品です。
