ブラームスのピアノ四重奏曲第1番ト短調op.25は1861年11月16日にハンブルクで初演されました。

ブラームスの室内楽曲は、どちらかと言うと基本的な四重奏曲よりも、五重奏曲や六重奏曲といった楽器の数が多い作品に人気が集まっているようです。特に交響曲同様ベートーヴェンの呪縛を受けていた弦楽四重奏曲は作曲にも時間がかかり、結局生涯で3曲しか作曲していません。ピアノ四重奏曲も同じく3曲しか作曲されておらず、演奏される機会も多くはありません。
