ジョン・レノンはビートルズ時代の1968年にソロ活動を開始し、1970年ビートルズ解散後は「平和」や「人類愛」を訴える歌を中心に歌い続けました。

1980年12月8日にマーク・チャプマンの凶弾に倒れるまで「ハッピー・クリスマス」「女は世界の奴隷か」「マインド・ゲームズ」「夢の夢」など数々のヒットを残しました。中でも最も人気が高いのが「イマジン」です。

「想像しなさい」で始まるこの歌は、天国と地獄、国、宗教など存在しないフラットな世界を訴えた曲です。
