ショスタコーヴィチの弦楽四重奏曲第8番ハ短調op.110は1960年10月2日にレニングラードのグリンカ小ホールでベートーヴェン弦楽四重奏団によって初演されました。

「ファシズムと戦争の犠牲者の想い出に」とされている弦楽四重奏曲第8番は、ショスタコーヴィチの15曲の弦楽四重奏曲の中で最も重要な作品であると同時に、古今の弦楽四重奏曲の中でも優れた作品のひとつでしょう。

実際には、この曲はショスタコーヴィチ自身を描いた作品と言われています。ショスタコーヴィチのイニシャルDS(Es)CHを織り込んであり、彼の作品を中心に他の作曲家の作品を引用している事がその理由です。

ショスタコーヴィチ自身の手紙では交響曲第1番・8番・10番、チェロ協奏曲第1番、ピアノ三重奏曲第2番、ムツェンスク郡のマクベス夫人と、ワーグナーのジークフリートの葬送行進曲、チャイコフスキーの悲愴を引用したと書いてあります。

注意深く聴いてみると第1楽章では、交響曲第7番や交響曲第5番の断片も聴くことができます。
