シェーンベルクの主題と変奏(管弦楽版)op.43bは、1944年10月20日にクーセヴィツキー指揮ボストン交響楽団の演奏で初演されました。

この曲は1943年にシェーンベルク唯一の吹奏楽曲として作曲されました。楽譜出版社から高校生でも演奏可能な優れた吹奏楽曲の依頼を受けて作曲されたものです。残念ながら、結局この曲は高度な技術が必要で初演はプロの吹奏楽団によって行われました。

翌年、管弦楽用に編曲されました。曲は、調性をもつ曲でシェーンベルクらしさが無い事から演奏機会は少ないようです。
