ブラームスの「運命の歌」op.54は、1871年10月18日に初演されました。

「運命の歌」は合唱と管弦楽のための曲で、ドイツの詩人ヘルダーリンの「ヒューペリオン」に基づいています。緩急緩の明確な三部形式で作曲されています。内容は「ギリシャの一青年ヒューペリオンが祖国解放戦争や女性への愛などを経て祖国の自然に目覚めるまでを描く物語です。
