イギリスの作曲家ヴォーン=ウィリアムズは1872年10月12日に生まれました。

彼はイギリス音楽の復興の祖とも言われる作曲家で、イギリスの民謡などを題材にした音楽を多数作曲しました。また、ラヴェルからオーケストレーションを学んだ事もあり、交響曲をはじめとする管弦楽作品に多くの傑作を遺しています。

バス・テューバと管弦楽のための協奏曲は、ロンドン交響楽団の創立50周年祝賀コンサートのために委嘱されたもので、テューバ協奏曲の中では最も頻繁に演奏されている曲です。

テューバという重厚な楽器を独奏としていますが、全体の印象は意外にも軽やかで爽やかだと感じます。
