ハイドンのネルソン・ミサ(ミサ曲第9番)は1798年9月23日に初演されました。

おびただしい数の作品を遺したハイドンは、宗教音楽も167曲作曲しています。番号のついたミサ曲も12曲作曲されています。ネルソン・ミサという題名は作曲中にネルソン提督率いるイギリス艦隊がトラファルガーでフランス・スペイン連合艦隊に勝利しナポレオンの野望を打ち砕いたというニュースに接して大喜びしたというエピソードから後に付けられたものです。

元々はMissa in Angustiis(困苦の時のミサ)というタイトルでした。12曲中唯一の短調の曲と言う事もあり、喜びとは程遠い内容になっています。
