アメリカの歌手ジム・クロウチは1973年9月20日に飛行機事故で亡くなりました。

ジム・クロウチは長い間売れずに、道路工事をやったり教師をやったりと仕事を転々としながら歌い続けて来ました。1972年の7月28歳の時に「ジムに手をだすな」が全米チャートのトップ10入りを果たし、翌年の7月に「ルロイ・ブラウンは悪い奴」が全米ナンバーワンに輝きました。事故は映画「ラスト・アメリカン・ヒーロー」の主題歌「アイ・ガッタ・ネーム」がヒット・チャートを上昇している最中に起きました。

死後発売された「タイム・イン・ア・ボトル」は、「もし瓶の中に時間を閉じ込めておければ・・・」に始まるバラード曲で、全米ナンバー1に輝き、日本でもヒットしました。30歳で亡くなったジムは正しく瓶の中に時間と共に閉じ込められてしまったわけです。

実は、私がオリジナル・アルバムを全て持っているアーチストはジム・クロウチだけです。「ジムに手を出すな」、「ライフ・アンド・タイム」「アイ・ガッタ・ネーム」の3枚。息子のA.J.クラウチは2歳で父親を失い、4歳の時に脳腫瘍で失明という困難を乗り越えてシンガー・ソング・ライターとして活躍しています。
