推理小説の作家レイモンド・チャンドラーは1888年7月23日にシカゴで生まれました。

チャンドラーは、ハードボイルド探偵の代名詞とも言えるフィリップ・マーロウの生みの親です。「大いなる眠り」で登場し7作の長編と、数作品の短編で活躍しました。

特に「さらば愛しき女よ」、「かわいい女」と「長いお別れ」は傑作と言われています。「長いお別れ」は文学作品としても高い評価を得ています。

従って、フィリップ・マーロウは映画化もされておりエリオット・グールドやロバート・モンゴメリーなどが演じています。そのエリオット・グールドが主演した作品が「ロング・グッドバイ」でした。音楽はジョン・ウィリアムズが担当しました。

日本でもつい最近浅野忠信主演でNHKでテレビドラマ化されました。1950年代の東京を舞台に脚色されフィリップ・マーロウは増沢磐二という名前に変えられていましたが内容は原作にかなり忠実でした。

Writer Raymond Chandler detective novel was born in Chicago on July 23, 1888.
