ワーグナーの演奏会用序曲「ファウスト」は1844年7月22日にドレスデンで初演されました。

ワーグナーはベートーヴェンの交響曲第9番に感銘を受けて、ゲーテの「ファウスト」に基づく大規模な交響曲の構想をして、1840年にその第1楽章を完成しました。結局、これに続く楽章は作曲されず、この楽章だけを序曲として完成されたのが序曲「ファウスト」です。
