アメリカのフォーク歌手ウディ・ガスリーは1912年7月14日にオクラホマ州で生まれました。

ウディは14歳の時に家族が離散し、放浪生活を送りました。その放浪の中で貧困や差別に翻弄される労働者の歌を歌い続け、フォークの元祖として知られています。

「我が祖国」は1940年に作られたウディ・ガスリーの代表曲で、アーヴィン・バーリンの「ゴッド・ブレス・アメリカ」への反発で作られた曲とも言われています。

この曲は、その後ボブ・ディラン、ピーター・ポール&マリー、ピート・シーガー、キングストン・トリオなど多くの歌手に歌い継がれています。
