作曲家アルノルト・シェーンベルクは1951年7月13日に喘息の発作によってロサンゼルスで亡くなりました。

シェーンベルクは調性を脱し無調音楽から十二音技法を確立した重要な作曲家のひとりです。彼は様々なジャンルの作品を遺していますが、特に声楽を含む作品に優れた作品が多いのも特徴でしょう。

「地上の平和」は、シェーンベルクがまだ無調音楽に足を踏み入れる前の1907年に作曲された無伴奏混声合唱曲でスイスの詩人コンラッド・マイヤーの詩をテキストとした曲です。宗教曲ではありませんが、内容は宗教的なもので、非常に劇的な音楽となっています。
