作詞家オスカー・ハマースタイン2世は1895年7月12日にニューヨークで生まれました。

祖父であるオスカー・ハマースタイン1世は、ドイツで生まれアメリカに移住し、タバコの製造で成功した後ブロードウェイに数々のオペラハウスを建てた功労者でした。父親も興業主として活動し、その環境で育ったオスカーは作詞家のみならずプロデューサーとしても活躍しました。

彼は、それまで歌と踊りの個人芸を見せる娯楽ショウだったミュージカルを、ストーリーを持つ芸術作品に押し上げた功労者のひとりです。

作詞家として最初に手がけたミュージカルは1927年の「ショウ・ボート」で、1958年の「サウンド・オヴ・ミュージック」まで数々の作品を送り出しています。特に、「オクラホマ」から始まった作曲家リチャード・ロジャースとのコンビは、多くの名作を生み出しています。

数多い作品の中で世界中で最も親しまれているのは「サウンド・オヴ・ミュージック」の「ド・レ・ミの歌」でしょう。

Oscar HammersteinⅠ his  grandfather was a contributor who built the opera house in a number of Broadway after he moved to the United States from German and was successful in the production of tobacco. Oscar's father also worked as a main box office, grew up in the environment has also worked as a producer as well as songwriter.

He is one of the distinguished service that pushed up Musicals to a work of art that has a story, from a musical entertainment show only show the individual arts of song and dance .

He sent out many musicals from 1927 first worked as a lyricist in "Show Boat", till 1958 "The Sound of music". In particular, the combination of the composer Richard Rogers, which started from "Oklahoma" has created a many masterpieces.

I think the work which is the most  loved around the world in a lot of his works would be "Do-Re-Mi" in "The Sound Of Music".
