ベルギーの作曲家アンリ・ヴュータンは1881年6月6日に亡くなりました。

1820年にヴァイオリン職人に家系に生まれたヴュータンは、幼少の頃からヴァイオリンを学び6歳でデビューしました。

ヴュータンは作曲家への憧れを抱いて1835年にウィーン音楽院に入学し作曲法を学びました。ヴュータンの作品の中では、やはりヴァイオリン協奏曲の人気が高いようです。全部で7曲あるヴァイオリン協奏曲の中でも第4番と第5番が曲の完成度、人気とも最も高い評価を得ています。

ヴァイオリン協奏曲第5番イ短調op.37は、単一楽章の曲で「ル・グレトリ」の標題でよばれています。これはアダージョの部分がグレトリのオペラ「ルシール」のメロディを用いているためです。

この曲は元々ブリュッセル音楽院の卒業試験の課題曲として作曲され、パリ音楽院の卒業試験の課題曲として改訂されたものです。従って、性格上非常に難しいテクニックを要求される曲となっています。
