ストラヴィンスキーの「結婚」は1923年6月13日にパリのゲテ・リリック座でバレエ・リュスによって初演されました。

「結婚」はバレエ音楽と言っても、我々が認識しているバレエとは随分異なる音楽です。同じストラヴィンスキーの作品の中でも「火の鳥」「ペトルーシュカ」「春の祭典」という代表作はまだ従来のバレエ音楽の延長線上と言っても過言ではなく、この原始主義時代の最後の作品ともいえる｢結婚」こそが新しいバレエ音楽と評価される事もあります。

ロシア民謡の中から結婚を扱った民謡詩を元に脚本を作成し、当初は大編成オーケストラも考えたようですが、結果的に4人の独唱と合唱、打楽器と4台のピアノという編成で完成しました。ピアノもほぼ打楽器として扱われており、声によるメロディと打楽器の伴奏という内容になっています。
