サティのバレエ「パラード」は1917年5月18日にパリのシャトレ座で初演されました。

サティと言えば「犬のためのぶよぶよした前奏曲」とか「ひからびた胎児」などという奇妙なタイトルのピアノ曲で知られていますが、舞台芸術のための曲も数曲作曲しています。

その中で最も重要な作品が「パラード」です。この曲はバレエ・リュスの新時代の幕開けとなったバレエ音楽で、台本をジャン・コクトー、衣装をパブロ・ピカソが担当するという、当時の最先端の芸術家によって生み出されたものです。

内容は、奇抜で時代を先取りしたものであったため、初演は一大スキャンダルを巻き起こしました。ストーリーは日曜日の見世物小屋を舞台で、客寄せのために出演者がテントの前で芸を披露し3人のマネージャーが客を呼び込むというものです。

音楽も、サイレン、ラジオの雑音、タイプライターを叩く音など現実音を取り入れた面白い曲ですが、最近ではバレエは殆ど上演されず、組曲として音楽が演奏される程度になってしまいました。
