イギリスの指揮者トーマス・ビーチャムは1879年4月29日に生まれました。

ビーチャム製薬の御曹司として裕福な家庭に生まれたビーチャムは莫大な資産をつぎ込んでオーケストラを作ったり、ロイヤル・オペラハウスを借り切ったり自分の好きなことをやってきました。この頃ディーリアスに出会い親交が続いたようです。

と言っても、ビーチャムはただのお金持ちの道楽ではなくイギリスの音楽界に大きな足跡を残しました。1932年のロンドン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団の創設もそのひとつです。

ビーチャムが積極的に取り上げたディーリアスはどの楽派にも属さない独自の道を歩んだ作曲家です。「楽園への道」は歌劇「村のロミオとジュリエット」の中の間奏曲で、駆け落ちをしたカップルが2人にとっての楽園である死への道を歩き出すという音楽。幻想的な癒し系の音楽です。
