ヴォーン=ウィリアムズ作曲の交響曲第6番ホ短調は1948年4月21日にボールト指揮BBC交響楽団の演奏でロンドンで初演されました。

ヴォーン=ウィリアムズはすでに75歳になっていましたが作曲意欲は旺盛で、先鋭的な第4番を除くそれまでの4つの交響曲とは異なる、激しい不協和音による闘争的な曲になっています。第1楽章から第3楽章までは第二次世界大戦の混乱を反映していると言われています。

全体の3分の1を占める終楽章は、対象的に終始ピアニッシモで演奏されますが、これは平和を暗示したものではなく生命の沈黙を表したものと考えられます。最後は消え入るように終わります。
