バルトークの管弦楽のための2つの肖像は1916年4月20日に初演されました。

2つの肖像は、「理想的なもの」と「醜いもの」の2つの曲で構成されています。この曲は生前発表できなかったヴァイオリン協奏曲第1番を下敷きにしたもので、第1曲はその第1楽章を改訂したもの、第2曲は初めは第2楽章転用したものでしたが、後に「ピアノのための14のバガテル」の終曲「私の恋人は踊る」を管弦楽に編曲したものです。
