ラフマニノフの幻想曲「岩」は1894年4月1日、ラフマニノフの21歳の誕生日にサフォーノフの指揮で、モスクワでのロシア音楽協会の第9回交響楽演奏会において初演されました。

幻想曲「岩」はラフマニノフにとっては最初期の管弦楽作品のひとつです。作品の冒頭にはミハイル・レールモントフの詩が引用されていますが、この曲の着想は直接この詩から受けたものではなく、この詩の一節をエピグラフとして掲げたチェーホフの短編小説「旅中」にインスピレーションを受けたものです。

人生に疲れた中年男が宿で若い娘と知り合い意気投合しますが、流刑地のような炭鉱に行く途中である事を知った娘を振り切り、娘も旅立っていきます。その娘の姿を見送り続ける男に雪が降り積もる姿をチェーホフは岩に例えたようです。最初は暗く重たい曲ですが、やがて軽快かつ華麗な音色へと進んでいきます。
